What Causes Wrinkles?

As the skin ages, essential collagen and elastin reduce production, leading to skin that is thinner, less elastic, and less hydrated. These factors lead to several visible signs of aging such as:

  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Lines that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Lip lines
  • Other lines and creases around the eyes, forehead, nose and mouth
In addition to the natural aging process, prolonged sun exposure also plays a major part in the development of wrinkles. Both UVA and UVB rays from the sun can damage collagen and connective tissues as well as stimulate the production of skin cells on the surface, creating a “leathery” texture and appearance. Brown spots and freckles can also develop from the skin producing melanin to protect itself. Yet another major factor in wrinkle development is facial expressions and underlying muscle movement in the face that can cause creases and lines over time. These are referred to as dynamic wrinkles, which are permanently etched into the skin gradually as the facial muscles become stronger.
